Working for Agricultural Development :

Nadia is an agriculture based district, yet here the farmers traditionally suffer from low productivity and poor market linkage. To address the problems of agriculture and framers RNSWS mobilised some local farmers to form their producers’ company. Ranaghat Agri-Procucer Company (RAPCO) is now successfully mobilizing the local farmers for enhanced productivity and better market linkage, which are to culminate in enhanced income through sustainable agriculture.

Workshop on Crop Insurance, KCC, MSP :

The workshop concentrated on the situational analysis of the area concerned and the necessity of crop insurance, KCC, MSP etc. The workshop reflected with the interaction of the target groups as follows :

  • The villages do not have any facilities of market, fertilizer and pesticide / insecticide from the government. Even these farmers do not get the facility of Krishan Credit Card nor did even some of them hear of this facility.
  • There is a decline in the proportion of cultivators in the total work force of the district that have added to the unemployed of semi-employed force, which has built a pressure on an already overcrowded agriculture labour market. The decline has been more severe in the rural sector where the proportion of cultivators in the total workforce declined. The lower section of peasantry is forced to sell or lease out their land and many of them join the labour market. According to law of the increasing division of the labour in society, small scale peasant agriculture must inevitably give way to large scale capitalist who also exploits the labour of others, or s/he will suffer the loss of her/his means of production and transformed into a wage worker.
  • With this scenario the workshop highlighted the possibilities to be explored by accessing the scopes and schemes of the govt. and by way of mobilizing own and community resources and the natural resources through group mechanism and creation of market for products of agri and allied.
